About Zoom and data security

Updated May 15, 2020

If you search for Zoom online, you will find several articles detailing Zoom's failures when if comes to data security. The will tell you that Zoom is downright unsafe to use and that your personally identifiable information (PII) is at risk of being sold to the highest bidder.

However, this assessment only concerns the free version of Zoom, and we do not use that a UCL.

At UCL University College, we purchase access to Zoom via DeiC, who also host e.g. Adobe Connect in Denmark. We work well with DeiC, and there are several legal agreements in place that safeguard your PII and ensure that our use of Zoom at UCL is in full compliance with GDPR legislation.

Consequently, there is no need to worry when using Zoom for e.g. video conferencing or oral exams.
